Michael Fassbender talks playing Assassin’s Creed to prepare for the film

Michael Fassbender has a distinct advantage for many of his film roles, which are rooted in either fictional super villains that are featured in countless comic books or real people whose lives have been documented in excess. Even his next role, starring in the feature adaptation of Assassin’s Creed, has nine video games along with books and comics offering a window into Ubisoft’s world; however, Fassbender revealed to EW that before he had been offered the part, he never played the game.

“I hadn’t played it before these guys approached me,” Fassbender says. “I’ve played it since mainly to get an idea of the physicality of the character. We’re striving to find something special. We believe the whole concept around it is special and want to service that the best we can. The fans are really passionate: very specific and they expect accuracy and historical detail. We’re really trying to capitalize and feed on and enjoy the fun element. We’re working hard to make this something special.”

You can check out a new photo from the film, featuring Fassbender and Ariane Labed in their Assassin garb, in the gallery below.

Fassbender leads the cast of Assassin’s Creed and is joined by Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight RisesInception), Michael K. Williams (“The Wire,” Paul Feig’s upcoming Ghostbusters), Jeremy Irons (“The Borgias”) and Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow). Justin Kurrzel (Macbeth) is directing the film.

The Assassin’s Creed movie follows a character by the name of Callum Lynch who, through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, is able to experience the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Assassin’s Creed is set for a December 21, 2016 release.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens sets new Christmas Day box office record

Yesterday saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens set a new domestic Christmas Day box office record with an estimated $49.3 million, crushing the previous record of $24.6 million set by Sherlock Holmes in 2009. It is also tracking to set a new second weekend record this weekend, beating the $106.6 million earned by Jurassic World this summer.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens yesterday, on its eighth day of release, became the fastest film to reach the $400 million mark domestically (topping the ten-day mark set by Jurassic World), and is on track to hit $500 million domestically this Sunday, its tenth day of release (besting the Jurassic World 17-day record).

Internationally, the film added $27.5 million on Friday for a global total of $76.8 million for the day. December 25 is traditionally a softer movie-going day in some international territories, including the UK where theaters are closed.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has now earned $440.4 million in North America and $449.9 million overseas for a worldwide total of $890.3 million. After just one week of release, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is already the #3 movie of 2015 domestically and the #5 movie of 2015 globally, set to cross $1 billion this weekend.

Because of the film’s success, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures’ domestic gross for 2015 passed the $2 billion milestone on Christmas Day for the first time in the studio’s history, adding to its record year (previous record year was $1.719 billion in 2013).
